What HIFU is and
how it works.
HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to a precise depth in the skin — typically 1.5mm (superficial dermis), 3mm (deep dermis), or 4.5mm (the SMAS layer beneath the dermis). The focused energy creates a controlled thermal injury at the target depth, triggering the body's natural collagen repair response without damaging the skin surface.
The SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) is the structural layer addressed in surgical facelifts. Non-surgical HIFU targets this same layer, stimulating collagen contraction and remodelling that produces a visible tightening and lifting effect over 6–12 weeks as new collagen forms.
HIFU does not produce surgical results — the degree of lift and tightening is proportionally less than a facelift. What it offers is measurable improvement in mild to moderate laxity, with no incisions, no anaesthetic, and no recovery time. The honest framing matters: candidates with significant laxity will be disappointed; candidates with mild to moderate laxity will see meaningful change.
The treatment is TGA-listed in Australia. Device quality and operator training vary significantly — both directly affect outcomes and safety. This is the most important variable in choosing a Sydney HIFU provider.
HIFU devices in the Sydney
market.
Not all HIFU devices are equivalent. The technology has evolved significantly since its introduction, and the Sydney market includes the full spectrum — from current-generation devices at quality clinics to older or non-TGA-listed devices at lower-tier operators.
Latest-generation HIFU delivering energy in micro-pulses 25× finer than previous models. Significantly improved patient comfort. Up to 3× faster than Ultherapy. Comparable or superior outcomes. TGA-listed. GlowRef exclusive first-session rate: A$99.
The original FDA-cleared HIFU device. Clinically effective but significantly more painful than current-generation devices, slower treatment time (60–90 min vs 30–60 min), and substantially more expensive (A$1,500–3,000+ for full face). Now largely superseded in Sydney by newer technology.
Many Sydney clinics use non-branded HIFU devices — some TGA-listed, some not. Quality, depth accuracy, and safety profile vary significantly. Ask specifically: is the device TGA-listed for the stated treatment indication? What is the model and manufacturer? A reputable clinic answers directly.
