Guided skin
consultation in
Sydney — explained.

A guided skin consultation is a structured first session where a credentialled practitioner assesses your skin, identifies your real concern, and produces a personalised treatment recommendation before any treatment begins. It is not a sales conversation. At a quality clinic, it's the foundation of every treatment that follows.

What it is

Guided skin consultation —
the definition.

A guided skin consultation is a structured first session at a clinical skin clinic or medispa. Unlike a standard facial booking — where the treatment is pre-selected — a guided consultation begins with a comprehensive assessment of your skin before any treatment is recommended.

The practitioner examines your skin under magnification or UV imaging, reviews your health and medication history, asks about your concerns and lifestyle, and then produces a personalised recommendation: which treatment, why, over what timeline, and what result to expect. You are not obligated to proceed to treatment on the same day.

A consultation is worth doing even if you think you know what you want. The most common outcome at a quality consultation is discovering that the treatment you came for is not the most appropriate for your actual concern — and that's information you needed before spending A$200–400 on the wrong session.

GlowRef's guided skin consultation (60 min) is one of three treatment tracks available through our booking service. It's the recommended starting point for any client who is new to clinical skincare, unsure which treatment is right, or has a specific therapeutic skin goal they want properly assessed.

What happens

Inside a 60-minute
guided consultation.

A quality guided consultation at a GlowRef partner clinic follows this sequence:

0–8
min
Intake — health, medications, history
Current medications (especially retinoids, antibiotics, blood thinners), recent procedures, history of isotretinoin, known allergies. This is a clinical intake — not a formality. The information directly determines which treatments are appropriate and which are contraindicated.
8–20
min
Skin analysis under magnification
The practitioner examines skin texture, congestion patterns, pigmentation, dehydration, barrier function, and vascular activity using magnification tools or UV imaging. This is the clinical basis for every recommendation that follows. At a quality clinic, the practitioner explains what they're seeing in real time.
20–35
min
Consultation — goals, findings, treatment options
The practitioner connects their clinical findings to your stated goals and explains which treatments are appropriate, which are not, and why. They describe the realistic outcome of each option — including what one session achieves vs what a course achieves. This is where you ask all your questions.
35–45
min
Treatment plan and pricing
A clear recommendation: which treatment, how many sessions, at what interval, and the total cost. All pricing disclosed before you agree to anything. You are never obligated to decide on the day.
45–60
min
First treatment (if you choose to proceed)
If you decide to proceed on the day, the remaining time is used for an initial treatment. If you prefer to consider the recommendation, you leave with the treatment plan and pricing to review. Either outcome is appropriate.

FAQ

Guided consultation questions.

What's the difference between a guided consultation and a regular facial booking?+
A regular facial booking starts with a pre-selected treatment. A guided consultation starts with skin analysis — the treatment is recommended after the practitioner has assessed your skin and understood your goals. The consultation produces a personalised recommendation rather than delivering a standardised service.
Do I have to commit to a treatment course on the day?+
No. You are never obligated to commit to anything during the consultation. A quality clinic provides the recommendation and pricing, then allows you to decide. Pressure to commit on the day is a red flag — if you experience it, note it.
Is a guided consultation at a GlowRef partner clinic the same as any skin consultation?+
GlowRef partner clinics — Beauty Affairs MediSpa CBD and Beauty Affairs Brookvale — are vetted for practitioner credentials and clinical standard. The consultation at these clinics follows the full structured format described above. Not all skin consultations at all Sydney clinics operate at this standard — the quality of the consultation depends entirely on the clinic.
How much does a guided skin consultation cost in Sydney?+
Varies by clinic. Some clinics include the consultation in the first treatment cost. Others charge A$50–150 for a standalone consultation — sometimes credited toward treatment if you proceed. Always confirm whether the consultation fee applies before booking. GlowRef's booking service routes your request to the appropriate clinic and the clinic will confirm pricing details directly.
How does GlowRef's booking service work for consultations?+
Select "Guided skin consultation" in the booking form, add your suburb and availability. GlowRef routes the request to the most appropriate vetted partner clinic (CBD or Brookvale). The clinic contacts you directly to confirm the appointment. No cost to submit a request.
